Is Kick-Ass actually a biopic?! [Feature]

One of the most popular films of 2010 seems to have taken over 10 people's lives quite literally. CNN reported that in Seattle, there is a real life Kick-Ass type character fighting crime that usually passers by would just ignore. Phoenix Jones is apparently the name you call when in trouble.

One man reported that whilst his car was attempting to be broken into, a figure "wearing this skin-tight rubber black and gold suit" came along and chased the criminal away. 

Every night Phoenix walks into a comic book store, changes his clothing to the appropriate superhero latex (through a hidden door, I might add), and patrols the streets waiting to solve crime. He believes he's proving to  the average person that they don't have to walk around, see bad things and do nothing. You would say that when your weapon of choice is a taser, and you've also got mace spray with protective bullet proof vests and metal shields - That's not usually the gear I'd wear if I was on a night out, besides the latex, of course. 

It sounds completely unbelievable, far fetched, and maybe this guy has a screw loose, but if he and his 9 other companions have prevented crime and kept people safe so far, this Kick-Ass wannabe gang is doing an alright job for me! It would be interesting if Kick-Ass actually turned into a biopic told before the real life events had actually happened. I'd like to know who Hit Girl is.

The Film Obsession's Top 10 Reviewed Films of 2010 [Feature]

This year has been very exciting in terms of big budget film releases. We've seen the rise of 3D creations (even though that's not necessarily a good thing), we've seen stunning spectacles on screen in terms of cinematography, and have witnessed some of the most heart warming stories told in film.

So, of all the films I've reviewed (including screenings from The London Film Festival), I'm conducting the famous "Top 10" list. I can imagine there will be a couple you disagree with, and some you won't be able to comment on as they haven't been released, but take my word for it, they deserve to be on this list (If you can trust my judgement).

Tamara Drewe

A true English delight with some very endearing characters. Every ounce of this was fun, surprisingly made you laugh and really was perfect was the summer release. 

The mini was a particular favourite English touch of mine.

Four Lions

Controversial comedy mixed with some good British filming. This film took the humour from Chris Morris and turned it into one of the most quoted films in England this year.

Kick-Ass

A real unique twist on a comic book based movie. This film broke the boundaries of how a superhero film could be made. Plus the story was written by Jane Goldman - A woman!

Toy Story 3

A genuinely stunning digital animation that hasn't lost any appeal after 10 years of the previous film. The characters are all the same with brilliant new ones.

Paranormal Activity 2

It caused uncontrollable shaking and sleepless nights from the very realistic cinematography. This film made me want to walk out of the cinema in fear, no joke.

Never am I sitting in my kitchen alone again.

Black Swan

Aronofsky showing the world he can turn even the sweetest thing into a dark, psychological whirlwind. The editing and costume was amazing in this, bringing every detail to life.

I'm kind of glad I didn't do ballet as a kid.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

A well thought out action film that makes your eyes pop out of their holes. I was shocked at how much I fell in love with this movie. It's just AWESOME.

You could say I lesbian it.

Shutter Island

Leonardo proves to be Hollywood's finest, as does the thrilling genre this film brings with it. The ending is what turned this film from great to genius.

I wouldn't mind looking after Leo, even if he was a psycho.

Inception

A film that's never quite been done before, and never will. This will not only top the charts of 2010, but in the history of filmmaking. A big statement yes, but it can cope with it.

I wanted it to keep spinning...

Never Let Me Go

This captured my heart from beginning to end, with a one off storyline and absolutely brilliant acting. Films rarely make me cry, but my face was very much soaked after this.

Andrew Garfield is a bit of alright too.

Film Releases: Monday 6th Sept

What's going to take your fancy?

Kick-Ass (dir. Matthew Vaughn, 2010) - Arguable one of the most original, funny action packed super hero movies we've ever seen, this tale of a young boy wanting to make the wrongs in the world right will have you laughing from beginning to end. Starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and the C Word swearing 13 year old Chloe Moretz, the controversial entertainment and originality of narrative is more than likely going to top the charts.



The Last Song (dir. Julie Anne Robinson, 2010) - Another soppy love story starring a singer with her own songs creating the soundtrack. Miley Cyrus takes on a more serious role and tries to rekindle her love for the father who she's become resentful of after her parent's divorce. She also falls in love... Perfect for the lovers of tear-jerkers.



Exit Through the Gift Shop (dir. Bansky, 2010) - A humorous and insightful look at the ever illusive Bansky and other famous graffiti artists who's work can be seen all over the world. This feature documentary takes you on an almost "behind the scenes" type of filming about how these rule breaking painters create the work that's admired by 1000s of people.



Burning Bright (dir. Carlos Brooks, 2010) - Imagine Snakes on a Plane but you're in a house and it's tigers rather than snakes. You've basically got the concept for this film. After a tornado, Kelly finds herself and her autistic brother (cue the weak, vulnerable character) hiding away from a tiger who's tormenting them from every corner of the rooms. Not Oscar winning...




After.Life (dir. Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, 2010) - Christina Ricci, Justin Long and Liam Neeson, now that's a pretty good cast to watch act together. Added to the topic of a girl stuck in limbo on whether she's dead or alive, with Neeson playing the psychotic doctor type and Long in his typical boyfriend role adds up to a pretty intense thriller. Definitely worth a watch on a Saturday evening with the lights off and popcorn flying everywhere.
