2012 is already turning out to be cra...

... ZY.

So, it's only the 2nd of January and I already have lots of things to look forward to.

1 - Returning to university.

Although 3rd year is horribly stressful, who I'm living with, what I'm studying and where I am is incredible this year. I live with 3 other wonderful ladies who also study film. They're all mental... But in a good way, it's not like I'm living in an asylum. The topics we've chosen seem to be really interesting ('Sexualities in Cinema' and 'Cinema and Realism', if you're interested), as oppose to the standard ones you're given in first and second year. Our house is lovely and CLEAN, and Brighton especially is just getting better and better the more I discover it. I have great friends from Angel Food and HMV, and an alright boyfriend so going back to university is only a delight.                                                                    

2 - I have a new job.

As well as working in the lovely Angel Food Bakery with these crazy girls (including another gorgeous girl to my left in this photo who also studies film), I will also be working for Bullet PR - A creative PR company in Brighton. I did a few days work experience at the beginning of December and they've asked me to come back one day a week. I am so unbelievable happy about this.

3 - Graduating.

After starting in 2009, I'm finally finishing university. I say "finally" as if I've been waiting desperately for this to happen - That's only half true. I do absolutely love the lifestyle, the social life, the friends, the classes, the course, the uni. But I am completely ready to stop referencing and getting results back... Just after another 16,000 words to write.

4 - A holiday.

I haven't been able to sit on a sandy beach, swim in the warm sea, wear a bikini or get a tan since I was about 14 I think. I'm going to be 22 this year. How awful is that?! After university my boyfriend and I have decided we need to let our skin feel the loveliness of vitamin D. This means a holiday with a plane involved. That's not quite the same as a 5 hour journey in a car to the cold, cold Cornwall but I think I'll be okay.

5 - Going into the real world.

All I want is to leave university and go into Film PR. I'm not stupid. I know this is near impossible but I am going to do all I can to make this happen. It might take days, months or years, but this WILL happen. It's my calling, I can feel it. I've done work experience in almost everything else to do with film, and this is the only thing I really enjoy and do well. So, if I don't make it happen I'm pretty much screwed. Unless I open up a cupcake shop, which is my  back up plan.


I don't really make New Year's Resolutions - I give into temptation too much to say "I'm not going to eat chocolate." Plus, I do work in a shop that sells cake so you tell me how I could go on a diet with discounted cake in front of me?


Instead I think of things I'd like to do. The things on this list include things I'd like to do, like graduating and getting a job, so I'll stick with those. Maybe I'll add "Buy more DVDs" to the list as well.

So, there you go. 5 things that makes this year CRAZY already.

March Update [Film Obsession News]

Oh Hi! Remember me?

You have no idea how much I've missed blogging on this site. So much has happened in the past few weeks that I thought I'd fill you all in. Exciting, ay?

First of all, I'M GOING TO BE ON THE RADIO! I recorded a show on Wednesday 23rd, and it's going to be broadcasted on Saturday 26th at 11am. Admittedly I'm only on it for about 10 minutes towards the end talking about film remakes and froze once or twice, but it was a lovely experience. It's Radio Reverb in Brighton (97.2 FM) and the show's called The Geekend. If you're not free for the whole hour, tune in about half 11 and I should be on sometime around then - It's in the last bit of the show. But it's also full of other film related things, so you might find it interesting to listen to anyway.

Secondly, I got a new job! I'm no longer going to be working at the lovely HMV. Unfortunately, as much as I love that place and all the crazies that fill it, I just fancied a change and have been lucky enough to get a job as a sales assistant at Angel Food Bakery. It's a gourmet cupcake shop in Brighton, and if you know me at all, you should realise I'm pretty obsessed by these little cakes. I start working at Angel Food Bakery on 11th April. I'm actually thinking of starting a blog based around all things cupcake, so keep a look out for that.

Thirdly, if you're going to keep up with the Jameson Empire Awards on Sunday 27th March, I'm covering it with Ben Montimer for HeyUGuys. We'll be on the red carpet and in the press room, so you'll be able to hear all the gossip. For those of you who followed me when I was covering the BAFTAs, you are probably well aware that I get very excited at these events, so be prepared for LOTS OF CAPITALS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!

Other than that, I'm going into my final term of my 2nd year at Sussex doing Film Studies. The work load is mentally horrible, so please be patient if you're expecting lots of posts. During term it's incredibly difficult finding the time between studying, mentoring and working. But I'll do my best from now! Three lovely girls from my course and I have found a house in Brighton to move into in September, so we'll stay up all night quoting anything we think of. It's all very Film Geek Chic, babe. Just one more thing, a certain someone has got me obsessed with Guillemots, and we're seeing them again on 18th April, but saw them this month where we met Fyfe Dangerfield himself afterwards. I almost crumbled when he had his arm around me, and I almost didn't let him go. But I thought it was safer for everyone that I did... *sighs*

I hope everything is well with all you lovely readers, and thanks for encouraging me to keep posting. It's such a lovely thing to hear, and so nice that you're all so interested. Please don't see this as showing off, it's merely a reflection of how enthusiastic and happy I am. Come see me in the cupcake shop! I'll make you a coffee.

"The Round Up Blog of 2010"

We've all eaten our mince pies, we've all celebrated the new year, so I thought maybe now's the time to reflect upon an emotional roller-coaster of a year for The Film Obsession and me. 

Starting off in January (Because that's the most chronological order you can do when writing about a year), I celebrated my 20th birthday, had gone into the 2nd term of my first year at Sussex University, and was trying to make the blog a little bigger. 

From then until April I was reviewing films and started my obsession with Twitter, to which I have now made some excellent friends. That one little social networking device can bring wonderful things, as I am about to explain...

By the time May came round, I thought it might be an idea to start a YouTube page giving my thoughts and opinions on films of the moment. Although it was (and still is) cringingly horrible to watch myself back, the videos produced a lot of views with just under 10,000 watches. I've paused for now, but 2011 has come along bringing with it a sparkly new video camera, so look out for more of those! In this month as well, I had finished my first year of Film Studies and got a job at HMV in Brighton, Churchill Square!

As I carried on vlogging and blogging, the views on this website started to rise a little which meant I had some sort of following. Then the lovely Phil and Kat came along (on Twitter) asking for writers to contribute to Blogomatic3000. I applied and after a trial week of successful posts, they let me write my words on their website! July was when the posts started to fly in... This was the month that I posted the trailer analysis for Paranormal Activity 2, which is now the most viewed blog on my website with over 30,000 views. Ridiculous, right? I still find it hard to imagine people who I've never met reading my work. It's a lovely, silly feeling, that is. 

August was really special. Blogomatic3000 sent me to my first press screening, which was Scott Pilgrim - One of now, my top 10 films. I was sent screeners of Kandahar Break, Love Life and Night Before The Wedding to review by American film companies, and met my good old buddy Monty who I would be nowhere without at press events. And then September came round which caused even more of stir as I exclusively interviewed David Whitney (the director of Kandahar Break) and went to the launch party of StreetDance 3D! Plus, getting into the London Film Museum to meet the team behind Blogomatic3000 was great fun! We geeked out probably as much as we could over film. 

October came and I started back to University, now in my scary, everything counts, 2nd year. But this was the ultimate month for the blog. I hit 10,000 views which was incredible and I only went and got a press pass for The London Film Festival, to which me of all people, was allowed to sit in the same room with the likes of Keira Knightly and Hilary Swank - Now THAT is absolutely bloody amazing. Another amazing thing is I met some lovely people at the festival including Hemanth. His laugh is like Buble's voice to my ears. And I met (finally) the brilliant HeyUGuys team who are literally the nicest people ever. 

After this immense month I actually did have to start doing proper work for a proper degree, so the posts die down a little towards the end of the year. One last junket I did get to attend was the Paranormal Activity 2 event, in which a hotel was paid for, a screening at Paramount Studios was taken place, and a Paranormal reading of ghosts and spirits in the London Tombs occurred. I've literally never, EVER, been so terrified in my life. Without the help of Jo, I think I would of actually passed out, but she kept me grounded... Until we ran from the room, and when I say ran, I believe neither of our feet touched the floor at one point we moved so fast. 

How immense is that? Me, a girl from Crawley who moved to Brighton to study film is hanging around with top journalists? It's just crazy. I'm not showing off in this blog, I'm giving a sense of my appreciation and love for what I do. It's overwhelming the amount of privileges I've been giving and can only hope that 2011 brings with it even more heart stopping excitement (Because when I was gazing into Andrew Garfield's eyes at the Never Let Me Go conference, my heart did stop).

The Film Obsession [Update]

Just thought I'd let you know what's going on with me and The Film Obsession in case you were as curious as that cat...


I'm almost done with the first term of the 2nd year at Sussex University doing Film Studies. Over the Christmas Period I have two essays to write - One to do with a completely separate subject, and another to do with an analysis on theories in a certain film. Maybe Silence of the Lambs with Psychoanalysis and Feminism? I think this may be quite interesting. I've already done a presentation on Freudian Theory in Goldfinger, which was probably one of the most fun presentations to complete (Including a slide on innuendos and multiple uses of the word 'phallic'). One sentence which I had to stop myself from laughing was "James Bond says Pussy Galore in a lustrous way," - Who says Film Studies isn't a real subject?


I'll also be working at HMV over Christmas. Last year I had Swine Flu so escaped that. This year is going to be mental. Already the queue is going down the aisles - Don't be put off or get angry with us, we do our best! I also have my discount card now so all these films coming out in December (Eclipse, Scott Pilgrim, Toy Story 3, Inception) will be even more anticipated! 


The blog is doing incredibly well.. Scarily almost. Over 30,000 views now which is amazing. Thank you so much. A lot of my friends have started blogs now, so they've caught the bug. It's brilliant. Take a look at these:
